HAZLETON, Pa., Jan. 23. - During the cold weather Evans & Co., at Beaver Meadow, placed furnaces along the stop leading to their operations to keep ice from forming on the rails and interfering with operations. The gas in the mines took fire on Sunday night from one of these furnaces and the fire is now working through nearly the whole workings. If the flames are not soon gotten under control the slope will be rendered useless. All the mules have been taken out of the mine and the work of flooding it is now being pushed as fast as possible. Two hundred men are thrown out of employment. The loss will be heavy.
