1917 - 3 TROLLEY CARS CRASH. FOG CAUSES ACCIDENT ON HACKENSACK TRESTLE - MOTORMEN MAY DIE.

Hackensack, N. J., Feb. 27. - Three trolley cars met in a crash on a trestle over the Erie Railroad this morning. As a result, the three motormen are in the hospital in a serious condition.

There is a single track on the trestle, and as a car enters it a signal is flashed. A heavy fog hid the signal lights today. A car bound from Newark to Edgewater entered the stretch of track and about half way over the trestle crashed into an eastbound car.

A third car, bound for Edgewater, struck the rear end of the car from Newark, which had already collided, and piled the debris higher on the tracks.

Many passengers were cut and bruised. GEORGE FOLEY and JOHN VAN WINKLE were the motormen in the head-on crash. Both may die. The third motorman, whose name is McMANUS, had fractures of both legs and he also may die. HERBERT GILBERT of 500 West 170th Street, New York City, was one of the injured passengers. After being treated he went to his home. The wreckage took fire. Five doctors and the Fire Department were called to the scene.
