1929 - ONE KILLED, FIVE HURT IN CRASH NEAR HEIGHTS. MARTINSBURG, W. VA., CAR HITS TELEPHONE POLE AND OVERTURNS.

Apparently traveling at a high rate of speed, one man was killed and five others injured when a Chevrolet automobile in which they were riding crashed into a telephone pole, on Webster's Hill, on the Old National Pike, a short distance from Braddock Heights, between 12 and 1 o'clock this morning. The body of the dead man was placed in charge of M. R. Etchison and Son, undertakers, and the five injured were rushed to the Frederick City Hospital.

The victims are:
Killed, FREDERICK HOLLIS, 23, West John Street, Martinsburg, W. Va., crushed about the face and head.

Injured:
A. W. SMITH, 26, Winchester Avenue, Martinsburg, W. Va., minor cuts and bruises.
RUSSELL STONER, 14, 2120 Aiken Avenue, Baltimore, lacerations and bruises.
RUSSELL LICKEY, 26, Porter Avenue, Martinsburg, W. Va., lacerations and bruises.
FRANK PIERCEO, 32, Baltimore, reported badly hurt.
DUDLEY WOLFORD, 17, Martinsburg, not badly hurt.

The party was returning from Baltimore to Martinsburg, with SMITH at the wheel. Apparently the driver was unable to take the curve opposite the old White House, leading to the top of the mountain and the machine left the road and sideswiped the pole. The car then continued some distance and upset and was wrecked.

HOLLIS was thrown free of the machine and fell heavily to the road. Apparently he was instantly killed. The others managed to free themselves from the wrecked car and were taken to the hospital in passing automobiles.

Sheriff William C. Roderick was notified and accompanied by Deputies Clyde Hauver and William R. Steiner, hurried to the scene. In the meantime State Police Officer Shockley reached the spot. State's Attorney William M. Storm and Alton Y. Bennett, the latter, acting coroner, also arrived shortly after the accident. After viewing the location of the mishap a further investigation was held open. A number of persons assembled at the scene soon after the accident.
