Death of Capt. Norton

The news was received in this city yesterday morning of the death of Capt. Zachariah Norton, at his residence in Clackamas county, on the 18th. Capt. Norton was one of the pioneer residents of Oregon, and was for some time a leading spirit in the early days of Portland history. His name is often found in the records of real estate transaction in this city, and, always when he resided here, he was found foremost in the ranks of those willing to lend their efforts to promote the prosperity and progress of the town. He has always been regarded by his fellow citizens as a man of the highest integrity and uprightness, and many a pioneer heart will be saddened at the news of his death. He was the father-in-law of Capt. Richard Williams, from whose residence the funeral will take place of Sunday next, at two o'clock. The remains will probably arrive here in the morning in charge of the Masonic fraternity, under whose management he will be buried in Lone Fir cemetery. And as the old residents of Portland gather round his last resting place no doubt they will feel that ever-recurring immpression that "All is vanity," and many will say -

I am gland the he has lived thus long,
And glad that he has gone to his reward;
Nor deem that kindly nature did him wrong,
Softly to disengage the vital cord.

Capt. Norton was about 70 years of age, and died after a long and painful illness, terminating in the complete destruction of all the elements of vitality. Peace to his ashes.
