Ellen Zalneraitis Obituary
BRATTLEBORO -- Ellen Blinkhorn Zalneraitis, 62, of Brattleboro, died on Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, in the care of her husband and the staff at Maplewood in Westmoreland, N.H.

She survived a cerebral aneurysm in 1992 only to succumb to the ravages of cancer.

She was born in Lowell, Mass., on Jan. 18, 1941. She graduated from St. Michael's School and Keith Hall in Lowell. She was honored her senior year at Keith Hall for winning the statewide oratory competition.

She and her family moved to Brattleboro in 1967. Besides raising her children as a single mom, she was active in her own quiet way in the lives of many children in Brattleboro. She was one of the founders of the Head Start and Follow Through programs in Brattleboro.

Mrs. Zalneraitis was well-known in the local restaurant business as a bartender, hostess, and waitress, especially at the Mole's Eye Café and the Jolly Butcher. She also worked at various times as a bookkeeper and office manager. In all situations, her primary focus was the people with whom and for whom she worked.

She will be remembered for her positive and caring approach to life. She had a smile for everyone she met, and especially enjoyed talking with other mothers about the joys and humorous aspects of raising children.

Besides her husband, Skip, she leaves her children, Ginger (Gaudette) Galanes of West Brattleboro, Paul Gaudette of Jacksonville, Fla., and Billy Gaudette of Northampton, Mass.; her stepdaughters, Jodi Zalneraitis of Worcester, Mass., Bekah Rowell of Southbridge, Mass., and Sarah Zalneraitis of Worcester, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; six sisters, Mary Phillips of Delmar, N.Y., Judy Boutselis of Dracut, Mass., Beth Place of Liberty, Maine, Ann Blinkhorn of Newbury, Mass., Kathy Blinkhorn of Toronto, Canada and Marilyn Blinkhorn of Portland, Maine; a brother, Billy Blinkhorn of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Mary (Carr) Blinkhorn and her brother, Dickie Blinkhorn.
