SARANAC- was taken from Plattsburgh, March 29, 1824. It lies upon the west border of the county, south of the centre. Its surface is a broken and mountainous upland. The highest summits along the west border are 4,000 feet above tide. It is watered principally by the Saranac River and its tributaries. There are several falls upon the Saranac, affording an immense amount of water-power. The east- part sloping towards the river is covered with a light sandy soil, and the river intervale with a sandy loam and alluvium.
