1908 - STEAMER BLOWS UP; 5 DEAD. DISASTROUS ACCIDENT TO THE TEMISKAMING AT NORTH BAY, ONTARIO.
North Bay, Ontario, Nov. 10. - The steamer TEMISKAMING was approaching the landing at Temiskaming at 6 o'clock to-night when the boiler exploded, wrecking the steamer and causing the death of at least five persons by the explosion or drowning. Several passengers and the crew were hurled into the water by the shock, and many are injured.
Owing to the remoteness of the scene of the tragedy, details are lacking. A man named McBRIDE, a hunter from the United States, is missing. J. MENARD and T. BERGOULIAN, firemen, and two men whose names are unknown are dead. Six are badly burned and several may die.
A special train was dispatched from Mattawa to bring the injured to that town.

Mother and Two Sons Among the Killed, Bride and Bridegroom Among the Injured.

NORTH BAY, Ont., Jan. 25. - Fifteen persons are dead and a large number injured as the result of a collision to-day between two sections of the Canadian Pacific express bound for Vancouver, which took place about eleven miles east of this place.

The rear sleeper of the first section, which was stalled, was telescoped by the locomotive of the second section and eight passengers were killed outright, seven dying later from their injuries.

At the hospital where the injured were taken it was stated that no further deaths were expected among the survivors.

The only names of the dead available tonight were those of a Mrs. Peam, or Paden, and her two young sons, who were on their way to Calgary. The two boys were killed outright and Mrs. Peam succumbed to her injuries.

North Bay, Ont, incorporated as a city in 1925, population 53 651 (2011c), 53 966 (2006c). The City of North Bay is located on a northeastern bay of Lake NIPISSING, at the junction of highways 11 and 17, some 345 km north of Toronto and 365 km northwest of Ottawa. As the traditional "Gateway to the North," the city is administrative seat for the District of Nipissing. North Bay lies roughly along the historic "Nipissing Route" of the FUR TRADE, where the portage of La Vase connected the waters of Trout Lake and the Ottawa and Mattawa rivers with Lake Nipissing, the FRENCH RIVER and Georgian Bay.

Its development awaited the slow progression of settlement up the Ottawa Valley and from southern Ontario that was initiated by the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1882). Later rail connections were made to Toronto (1886) and to the resource areas northward (1904).
