Johnstown, a post-village in the above township, and capital of Fulton county, New York, 46 miles W. N. W. from Albany, and 4 miles N. from the Erie canal. It contains a bank, an academy, 2 newspaper offices and churches of 5 or 6 denominations.

1887 - Loss, Fifty Thousand Dollars.
JOHNSTOWN, N.Y., Dec. 30. - Charles King's glove-leather establishment was burned Tuesday night. Sixty men are thrown out of employment. The loss estimated at about $50,000; insurance, $35,000.

1889 - At Johnstown, N.Y., the Union Academy building was burned on the 1st, causing a loss of $45,000. George Thompson, chief of the fire department, was instantly killed, and Teddy Smith was fatally hurt by the falling walls.

Johnstown, a post-village, capital of Fulton co, N.Y., in Johnstown township, on Cayadutta Creek, 4 miles by rail N. of Fonda, and 48 miles W.N.W. of Albany. It has 8 churches, a union school, 2 banks, gas-works, 3 newspaper offices, 2 grist-mills, a planing-mill, and extensive manufactures of gloves and mittens which give employment to many skilled operatives. Pop. in 1880, 5013; in 1890, 7768.
