History of Mechanicville, New York, USA

General Henry Knox and his troops passed through here in the winter of 1775-76 with a load of 59 cannons pulled by teams of oxen.
The cannons were captured from the British at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. They were transported from Lake Champlain to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts and used by George Washington's army on March 17, 1776 (Evacuation Day) to free Boston from British control during the American Revolutionary War.

The first documented occurrence of the name "Mechanicville" dates back to 1829.
The name comes from the early settlers, who were independent mastercraftsmen such as millers, carpenters, or butchers, whose professions were commonly known as the "mechanical arts" at the time.

1930 - MAN KILLED AS IRON PIPE FALLS
Mechanicville, N. Y., Feb. 19 - Joseph Mezerowicz, 41, was killed instantly here when a 30-foot iron stand-pipe fell on him while it was being moved in the Boston & Maine Railroad shops, where he was employed as a blacksmith. The widow and four children survive.
