General Henry Knox and his troops passed through here in the winter of 1775-76 with a load of 59 cannons pulled by teams of oxen.
The cannons were captured from the British at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. They were transported from Lake Champlain to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts and used by George Washington's army on March 17, 1776 (Evacuation Day) to free Boston from British control during the American Revolutionary War.
The first documented occurrence of the name "Mechanicville" dates back to 1829.
The name comes from the early settlers, who were independent mastercraftsmen such as millers, carpenters, or butchers, whose professions were commonly known as the "mechanical arts" at the time.
1854 - Mechanicsville
Mechanicsville, a post-village of Saratoga co., New York, on the Hudson river, and on the Champlain canal, 12 miles N. from Troy. It contains a cotton factory and several mills.
Mechanicville became an incorporated village in 1859, when it had about 1000 inhabitants.
It grew rapidly as textile mills, factories, and a linen thread company came to Mechanicville.
In 1878, additional railways came to the village of Mechanicville, and it became an important center of papermaking.
1895 - Mechanicsville
Mechanicsville, a post-village of Saratoga co., N.Y., in Half Moon and Stillwater townships, on the W. bank of the Hudson River, on the Champlain Canal and the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad, 18 miles N. of Albany, and 14 miles S.E. of Ballston. It has an academy, 4 churches, and manufactures of sash, blinds, &c. Pop. in 1890, 2679
In 1898, Robert Newton King built a hydroelectric power plant on the Hudson River in Mechanicville.
The Mechanicville Hydroelectric Plant is now the oldest continuously-operating hydroelectric plant in the United States.
1906
Mechanicsville, a banking post-village of Saratoga co., N.Y., on the W. bank of the Hudson River and on the Boston and Maine and Delaware and Hudson Rs., 20 miles N. of Albany. It has manufactures of sash, blinds, paper-boxes, fibre, knitted goods, etc. Pop. in 1900, 4695.

Mechanicville became a city in 1915.
1930 - MAN KILLED AS IRON PIPE FALLS
Mechanicville, N. Y., Feb. 19 - Joseph Mezerowicz, 41, was killed instantly here when a 30-foot iron stand-pipe fell on him while it was being moved in the Boston & Maine Railroad shops, where he was employed as a blacksmith. The widow and four children survive.
The largest paper mill in the world, which Mechanicville had hosted since 1904, ceased operations in 1971.
