History of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, USA

Roanoke Island, North Carolina, is in the channel which connects Albemarle Sound with Pamlico Sound. It is separated from the mainland by Croatan Sound.

Roanoke River is formed by the Dan and Staunton Rivers, which unite at Clarksville, Mecklenburg co., Va. It passes into North Carolina, forms the boundary between the cos. of Halifax and Martin on the right and Northampton and Bertie on the left, and enters the W. end of Albemarle Sound. Length, nearly 230 miles. Steamboats can ascend it to Weldon.

Roanoke Rapids, a post-town of Halifax co., N.C., on the Seabord Air Line. The baking post is Weldon. It manufactures silk and cotton goods and has lumber interests. Pop. in 1900, 1009.
