1895 - Roanoke Island
Roanoke Island, North Carolina, is in the channel which connects Albemarle Sound with Pamlico Sound. It is separated from the mainland by Croatan Sound.

Roanoke River is formed by the Dan and Staunton Rivers, which unite at Clarksville, Mecklenburg co., Va. It passes into North Carolina, forms the boundary between the cos. of Halifax and Martin on the right and Northampton and Bertie on the left, and enters the W. end of Albemarle Sound. Length, nearly 230 miles. Steamboats can ascend it to Weldon.
