East Bridgewater, Massachusetts
Plymouth county. This town lies on a branch of Taunton river, and was, until 1823, a part of the ancient Bridgewater. It is 24 miles S. by E from Boston, and 17 S.W. from Plymouth. Population, 1830, 1,653—1837, 1,927. East Bridgewater has a good water power, and manufactured in the year ending April 1, 1837, $414,044 value of goods. The articles consisted of cotton goods, boots, shoes, leather, bar iron, nails, tacks, lead pipe, chaises, window blinds, sashes and shoe boxes.

It manufactures many boots and shoes, and on a branch of Taunton River are several factories of cotton, nails, &c.
The cannon cast here during the war of the Revolution were of great service to the continental army.

East Bridgewater Massachusetts, 1890
East Bridgewater is a flourishing farming and manufacturing town in the northwesterly part of Plymouth County, 25 miles south by southeast of Boston by the Old Colony Railroad, which passes directly through it. It is bounded on the north by Whitman, east by Hanson and Halifax, south by Bridgewater, and west by West Bridgewater and Brockton. The assessed area is 9,930 acres, of which 2,328 is woodland.
The geological structure is carboniferous. There are valuable beds of clay suitable for brickmaking, which is carried on extensively. Near the centre is a deposit about thirty feet deep and of excellent quality. The material is dug and ground by steam-power, and dried in extensive sheds, so constructed as to be opened or closed at once for the admission of the sun or the exclusion of rain.

1893 - May 21 - (East Bridgewater) - a fire wiped out the Old Colony Iron Foundry and Machine Shop, levelled the Methodist Church and two large warehouses.
The loss was estimated at $100,000.00. At one time 15 of the buildings were on fire. The cause of the fire was said to be a flying spark from the engine of the locomotive... It was said that had the fire broke out in the evening instead of the afternoon, the entire town would have been destroyed.

East Bridge'water, a post-village of Plymouth co., Mass., in a township of its own name, on Taunton River, on the Abington & Bridgewater Railroad, and near the Old Colony Railroad, 24 miles S. of Boston. It has 4 churches, a savings-bank, a newspaper office, a rolling-mill, a nail factory, a brass-foundry, and manufactures of cotton-gins, shoes, and bricks. Pop. of the township in 1880, 2710; in 1890, 2911.
