Greenfield, Saratoga, New York, USA

Greenfield is named after Greenfield, New Hampshire.

The area was first settled circa 1786, and in 1793, the town was formed from parts of the Milton and Saratoga. Its land area was reduced in 1794 by contributions of some of its territory to the newly formed towns of Day, Corinth, and Hadley.

Greenfield includes: Chatfield Corner, Frink Corner, Greenfield Center, Kings, Lake Desolation, Middle Grove, Mt. Pleasant, North Greenfield, Pages Corners, Porter Corners and South Greenfield.

1838 - Stage Accident
The Albany mail stage from Greenfield, N. Y. was precipitated into the Green river, on Thursday last, by the bridge giving way. The passengers, fortunately escaped without injury, but the driver was severely hurt.

1843 - Dr. Duncan Acquitted
STRANGE. - Dr. Duncan, who was tried last week at Greenfield, N. Y., on the charge of adultery with Mrs. Kemp, at Shelburne, has been acquitted. The trial excited great interest, and the verdict was received with a strong demonstration of popular approval. According to the Greenfield Gazette, Dr. Duncan was a man of high standing among the people of Shelburne, and had had their entire confidence. "In his defence, it was contended that Mrs. Kemp was induced to confess herself guilty of this criminal intercourse through interests and fear of her husband, and that since she had made the confession, she was afraid to tell the truth through fear of the consequences of her swearing to what was not true"!!

1869 - A Triple Wedding
In the north part of Saratoga county, Greenfield, N. Y., and in the last part of the old year, there was a trio of weddings in one house at the same time, on which occasion and old lady and her two daughters were led to the alter. The mother was a widow; the first daughter was a widow of two months, and her husband a widow of four months; the other was a miss of sweet seventeen, and the espoused of a man of about thirty years, who had recently obtained a divorce from a former wife. The dominie was considerably confused to know when he had finished the job, and it was understood that he was to be paid at wholesale price and receive the equivalent in chopping wood. The husband of the mother, after all was over, declared that he should run the homestead himself and the rest might shift for themselves, since which the deponent has had no further tidings.

Mrs Elihu Wing, wife of a wealthy farmer of Greenfield, N. Y., and mother of Daniel E. Wing, a prominent Saratoga lawyer, was burned to death, on the 20th, by her clothing catching fire from a lamp.

1893 - Mrs. Parkhurst not guilty
The trial of Mrs. Hanna Mary Parkhurst, of Greenfield, N. Y., who was charged with murdering her 3-year-old son, ended yesterday in a verdict of not guilty.

Greenfield, or Greenfield Centre, a post-village of Saratoga co., N.Y., in Greenfield township, 1 mile from Greenfield Station on the Adirondack Railroad, and 6 miles N.W. of Saratoga Springs. It has 2 churches. The name of its post-office is Greenfield Centre. The township has 6 churches, 2 paper-mills, and a pop. of 2692.

1899 - Greenfield
Greenfield lies north of the centre of the county. It is bounded on the north by Corinth, on the east by Wilton, on the south by Saratoga Springs and Milton and on the west by Providence and Edinburgh. The town is defined as follows by the Revised Statutes:

The town of Greenfield shall contain all that part of said county beginning at the southeast corner of lot number seven, in the seventeenth allotment of the patent of Kayaderosseras, and running thence westerly along the north bounds of the sixteenth allotment of said patent to the southeast corner of Providence; then north on the east line of the same to the southwest corner of Corinth; then easterly along the south bounds of Corinth to the west bounds of the twenty-third allotment; then along the same southerly to the north bounds of the seventeenth allotment; then along the same southwesterly to lot number seven in said seventeenth allotment; then southerly along the east bounds thereof to the place of beginning.
