Polly Sweet was born in Sag Harbor in 1815 and immediately upon getting married in 1835 convinced her husband that fame and fortune awaited them in California. Starting out by wagon they traveled to Albany, across New York State to Buffalo and by packet-ship to Chicago. she eventually crossed the Rocky Mountains through Colorado, Utah, Nevada and reached Sutters Fort in California in 1845. Polly Sweet was the first woman from New York State to cross the Great Plains to the Pacific coast by prairie wagon. When gold was discovered in 1848 in Central California Polly Sweet became the first American woman at the scene of discovery. easthampton.com
The town includes the village of East Hampton, as well as the hamlets of Montauk, Amagansett, Wainscott, and Springs. It also includes part of the incorporated village of Sag Harbor. wikipedia

East Hampton, a post-township of Suffolk county. New York, forming the eastern extremity of Long Island, terminating in Montauk point. Population, 2122.
East Hampton, a post-village in the above township, near the ocean, about 110 miles E. by N. from New York. It has a church, an academy, and probably 600 inhabitants.

A New York telegram, of the 2d, states that a large fire had been raging for a few days previous in the woods between Sag Harbor and East Hampton, Long Island. It has burned over five hundred acres, and caused a vast amount of damage.
