History of Union, New York, USA

The town of Union was established in 1791, while in Tioga County before the creation of Broome County.
The town, a "mother town" of the county, was later reduced in size by the formation of other towns, the first being the town of Owego (then called the "Town of Tioga") in 1800, followed by Lisle (1801), Greene (1808, now in Chenango County), Vestal (1823), and Maine (1848).

Union, a thriving post-village of Broome co., New York, in the valley of the Nanticoke creek, and one-half mile from the Union station of the New York and Erie railroad. 233 miles from New York city. Settled in 1789. by Judge Merscreau. Population of the village, about 1200; of the township, 2143.

Union, a post-village in Union township, Broome co., N.Y., 3 miles N. of the Susquehanna River, and on the Erie Railroad, 8 miles W. of Binghamton. It has a newspaper office, a banking-house, and 3 churches. Pop. about 700; of the township, 2638.

1924 - Union
UNION

The township of Union was created by an act of the Legislature passed March 16th, 1791. Up to that time the territory had been included in Tioga county. By the same act four other townships were erected, namely, Chemung on the west, Owego lying next toward the eastward, Chenango adjoining Union on the east, and Jericho still farther to the eastward. As described in the act, Union township included "All that part of said county of Tioga bounded southerly by Pennsylvania, westerly by the town of Tioga, northerly by the north bounds of the county of Tioga and easterly by the rivers Chenango and Susquehanna."

As originally constituted, Union township had a territory of more than 700 square miles. A number of reductions have left it with about 33 square miles of territory, or not far from 20,872 acres.
