Bridge of Flowers, Shelburne Falls, Mohawk Trail
The bridge with its graceful arches was constructed in 1908 for trolleys to convey raw materials from the railroad yard in Buckland across the Deerfield River to the factories in nearby hill towns. As a concrete structure, it could bear heavy loads better than the iron bridge that it parallels.
In 1929, the abandoned trolley bridge was decorated with hundreds of flowers.

The Stone Tower, Shelburne Falls, Mass.
There had been two wooden, recreational, observation towers on the summit of Massaemett Mountain during the late 1800’s. One burned down and the other blew down. A more durable stone & cement tower was constructed in 1909, from stone quarried near the summit of the mountain. In 1911, the tower also began to be used as a fire lookout to watch for forest fires. townofshelburne.com

Sweetheart Tea House, On the Mohawk Trail, Shelburne Falls, Mass.
Alice Brown opened the Sweetheart Tea Room in 1916, as respite for weary travelers on the Mohawk Trail who would stop in for some food, tea, and the heart-shaped maple candies the Sweetheart became known for. Its sign became a beacon on Route 2 for those headed to Shelburne Falls, and its hospitality beckoned tourists and locals alike for decades. After a succession of owners, the Sweetheart closed its doors many years ago… but the iconic building and sign still bring back fond memories for those who pass it by. youtube.com

1907 - ENGINE DERAILED ON TRESTLE
Narrow Escape From Bad Wreck on Boston and Maine Road Near Shelburne Falls.
A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred Wednesday evening on the bridge across the Deerfield river at Shelburne junction, near Shelburne Falls. The engine drawing the express train from Boston for the west, known as the Consolidated Limited, leaving Greenfield at 4 o'clock, was running about an hour and a half late Wednesday afternoon. When the train was within a quarter of a mile of the bridge a flange of one of the wheels under the boiler broke.
The engine kept the rails until it reached the bridge, which is a long trestle work, probably 23 or 30 feet high, when it left the rails. The guard rail held it, however, from going into the river. Both tracks were blocked and the wrecking train was sent out from Greenfield. After one track was cleared another engine was sent for and the express train started on for the west, reaching Shelburne Falls about 9:30. The express train for the west out of... Read MORE...
