History of Northumberland, New York, USA

General Henry Knox and his troops passed through here in the winter of 1775-76 with a load of 59 cannons pulled by teams of oxen.
The cannons were captured from the British at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. They were transported from Lake Champlain to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts and used by George Washington's army on March 17, 1776 (Evacuation Day) to free Boston from British control during the American Revolutionary War.

1805 - Killed by Wagon
A daughter of Mr Marlin, merchant, of Northumberland, (New-York state) in the 14th year of her age, was instantly killed by a wagon running over her. It appears there were two wagons endeavoring to run by each other.

Mrs Rachel, aged about twenty years, wife of James P. Van Derwarker, of Northumberland, New York, committed suicide by cutting her throat with a razor. She had been married about three weeks. She was an amiable and respectable young woman, and a member of the reformed Dutch church.

Northumberland, a post-village in Northumberland township, Saratoga co., N.Y., on the Hudson River, about 35 miles N. of Albany, and 10 miles E. by N. of Saratoga Springs. The township is intersected by the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad, and contains a village named Gansevoort. Pop. of the township, 1624.

Northumberland is one of the eastern tier of towns. It is bounded on the north by Morean, on the east by the county line, on the south by Saratoga, and on the west by Wilton. The town is defined as follows by the Revised Statutes:

The town, of Northumberland shall contain all that part of said county beginning in the east bounds of the county, at an easterly continuation of the north bounds of lot number four, in the twentieth general allotment of the patent of Kayaderosseras, and running thence westerly -in the direction of said north bounds the distance of five miles and fifty-three rods from the west bank of Hudson’s river; then southerly one degree east to the north bounds of the tenth allotment of said patent; then east along the same and continuation thereof to the bounds of the county; and then northerly along the same to the place of beginning.
