General Henry Knox and his troops passed through here in the winter of 1775-76 with a load of 59 cannons pulled by teams of oxen.
The cannons were captured from the British at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. They were transported from Lake Champlain to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts and used by George Washington's army on March 17, 1776 (Evacuation Day) to free Boston from British control during the American Revolutionary War.

1791 - Stillwater was established as a town in 1791, when Saratoga County was formed.

1867 - Died trying to rescue cow
Sidney Tompkins, a farmer of Stillwater, New York, discovered that one of his cows had a potato lodged in her throat. Mr. Thompkins undertook to relieve the animal, and thrust his arm partially down her throat. While standing over the head of the animal, the cow pressed his head downward and suddenly elevating it again, caught Mr. T. upon her horns, throwing him several feet into the air. In his descent he struck upon the palings of a fence, one of the pickets which entered his neck, severing one of the arteries, from which he bled to death in a few minutes.

1895 - Stillwater
Stillwater, a post-village in Stillwater township, Sar atoga co, N.Y., on the W. bank of the Hudson River, and on the Champlain Canal, 23 miles above Albany, and about 14 miles S.E. of Saratoga Springs. It has 5 churches, 2 knitting-mills, and manufactures of paper, lumber, wool, &c. Pop. 737; of the township (which comprises part of Mechanicsville), 3439. At this place General Burgoyne attacked General Gates, September 19, 1777, and was repulsed, with a loss of about 500 men. This was called the Battle of Stillwater. This township was also the scene of another important battle, which occurred October 7, 1777, and resulted in the defeat of General Burgoyne.

Stiliwater is one of the eastern tier of towns. It is bounded on the north by Saratoga, on the east by the county line, on the south by Halfmoon and on the west by Malta. The Revised Statutes define the town as follows:

The town of Stillwater shall contain all that part of said county bounded southerly by Halfmoon, easterly by the east bounds of the county, westerly by Malta, and northerly by the north bounds of lot number seventeen in Saratoga Patent, continued in the same direction west to the town of Malta.

The surface of the town is moderately hilly. The hills known as Bemus Heights lie partly in the northern part of the town. The flats along the Hudson are bordered by a range of bluffs from sixty to a hundred feet high. None of the streams are of importance. Stillwater, a poet-village in Stillwater township (town), Saratoga co., N.Y., on the W. bank of the Hudson River and on the Boston and Maine R., 23 miles above Al bany and about 14 miles SE. of Saratoga Springs. It has knitting-mills and manufactures of paper, lumber, etc. Pop. of the town (which comprises part of Mechanicsville) in 1900, 4989 ; of the village, 1007. Stillwater is memorable for the two battles fought there between the forces of Burgoyne and Gates on Sept. 19 and Oct. 7, 1777, which were followed by the surrender of Burgoyne on Oct. 17. The first engagement is sometimes called the battle of Bemis Heights and the second is often designated as the battle of Saratoga.
