Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, USA

"Stillwater, a post-village in Stillwater township, Sar atoga co, N.Y., on the W. bank of the Hudson River, and on the Champlain Canal, 23 miles above Albany, and about 14 miles S.E. of Saratoga Springs. It has 5 churches, 2 knitting-mills, and manufactures of paper, lumber, wool, &c. Pop. 737; of the township (which comprises part of Mechanicsville), 3439. At this place General Burgoyne attacked General Gates, September 19, 1777, and was repulsed, with a loss of about 500 men. This was called the Battle of Stillwater. This township was also the scene of another important battle, which occurred October 7, 1777, and resulted in the defeat of General Burgoyne."
