1833 - The town of Moravia was formed in 1833 from the Town of Sempronius.

MORAVIA, taken from Sempronius, 20th March, 1833; distant W. from Albany 157, from Auburn S. E. 20, miles; surface hilly, with a broad valley, in which is the Inlet of Owasco lake, running to its recipient with a very rapid current. A branch of the Inlet from the E. falls perpendicularly 70 feet at the head of the Owasco flats. The flats are highly fertile, but the soil of the hills is indifferent. The hills are high, and afford a very extensive prospect. The town is generally underlaid with slate. Settlements commenced here in 1794, when there were still some Indians residing on the flats. Moravia and Montville are post villages.

Moravia contains a Presbyterian and an Episcopal church, 2 taverns, 6 stores, 1 cotton manufactory, 1 grist, 1 saw mill, clothing works, tannery, distillery, and about 50 dwellings. Montville, 1 mile E. from Moravia, has a grist mill, tavern, store, and 6 or 8 dwellings.

Moravia, a post-village in the above township, on the Owasco inlet, 18 miles S. S. E. from Auburn. It contains 2 or 3 churches, the Moravian Institute, a cotton factory, and many handsome dwellings. Population estimated at 800.

Moravia, a post-village in Moravia township, Cayuga co., N.Y., on the Owasco Inlet, and on the Southern Central Railroad, 17 miles S. by E. of Auburn. It is in a fertile narrow valley, bordered by steep hills. It contains 3 or more churches, a union graded school, a national bank, 2 newspaper offices, 2 flouring-mills, and manufactures of ploughs, staves, spokes, sash, blinds, &c., Pop, about 1500. The township is contiguous to Owasco Lake. Pop. 2351.

Judge Walter Wood home in Montville built in 1812, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. James P. Ventura. Millard Fillmore studied law with Wood from 1819 to 1821.

Millard Fillmore, a wool and cloth carder apprentice and self-educated son of a hardtimes farmer in 1819 moved with his father from his boyhood home in New Hope to Montville. Montville with its ample water power was then the hub of industry in the area. The local entrepreneur of Montville was Judge Walter Wood who had served as the first judge of Cayuga County from 1810 to 1817.

Wood and his wife, Paulina Mosher Wood, had been among the first Quakers to arrive in Cayuga County and he was appointed deputy clerk of Onondaga County that same year, 1794.
