Saint-Basile-le-Grand was created on June 15, 1871, from parts of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Saint-Joseph-de-Chambly. The city was named in honor of Saint Basil the Great and Basile Daigneault, the first mayor and a key community contributor. Its history includes the construction of its church in the 1870s, its official incorporation as a city in 1969, and a major arson attack on a PCB warehouse in 1988 that led to a large-scale evacuation.
