Pittsburg is a town in Coös County, New Hampshire. It is the northernmost town in New Hampshire and the largest town by area in New England. Pittsburg derives its name from William Pitt, Prime Minister of Great Britain. Prior to its incorporation in 1840, the area was settled c. 1810 and known as the Territory of Indian Stream. It had the unique distinction of having been its own microstate briefly during the 1830s, called the Republic of Indian Stream, due to an ambiguous boundary between the United States and Canada.

Indian Stream Territory.

Is a tract in New Hampshire N of lat. 45°, extending to the British possessions in L. Canada. It was surveyed in 1805, and contains 160,363 acres. Lake Connecticut and several considerable ponds are situated within this tract.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory. 1895 - Pittsburg
Pittsburg, a post - hamlet in Pittsburg township, Coos co., N.H., on the Connecticut River, about 45 miles N. by E. of Lancaster. It has a church & starch-mill, and several saw-mills. The township is the northernmost in the state, and also the largest in area. It has a pop. of 400.
