Essex county. This town lies on the Canada line, about 30 miles N. of Guildhall. It has several large ponds and a branch of Nulhegan river. Some of these waters pass to the Connecticut and some to the river St. Francis. The soil of Averill is cold and broken, with few cultivators.
Boundaries. North-east by Canaan, south-east by Lemington, south-west by Lewis, and north-west by Norton.
First Settlers. This town was chartered in 1762.
Productions of the Soil. Potatoes, 400 bushels ; hay, 20 tons ; maple sugar, 600 pounds.
Distances. Thirty miles north from Guildhall, and sixty miles north-east from Montpelier.
One of the highlights of the area is the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, just a short drive from Averill. This refuge is ideal for hiking and nature observation, with trails meandering through wetlands, forests, and meadows. For a unique experience, visit the Nulhegan Basin Division of the refuge, which showcases Vermont's stunning boreal forests and diverse ecosystems. In the winter months, the trails become a wonderland for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
