In 1846, the year of the founding of the mission of Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière, in the region of Sagenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (territory of the current Regional County Municipality of Fjord-du-Saguenay),
a "imposing” forest fire which began on May 5 devastated an area of land southeast of Jonquière and contiguous in its northern part to Chicoutimi. Subsequently, a large part of the area was identified under the name of Grand-Brûlé.

When this place, located at the exit of the Laurentides wildlife reserve, was erected as a parish municipality in 1883, the name retained, Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière, evokes the township proclaimed under the name of Laterrière, in 1850.
Marc-Pascal de Sales Laterrière or La Terrière (1792-1872), Lord of Les Éboulements since 1816, represented the county of Saguenay in the Parliament of United Canada in Quebec, from 1845 to 1851.

The current Laterrière sector is the result of the merger, in 1983, of the municipalities of the village of Laterrière, erected in 1921, and the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière (established in 1883).
It was recognized as a city in 1989. A major aluminum smelter was established there during the 1980s. On February 18, 2002, La Laterrière was integrated into the city of Saguenay and its territory became district number 16.
