Early History
Circa 1850, the first settlers began to colonize the area, followed afterwards by families especially from the Charlevoix area. The settlement, the oldest village on the shores of Lake Saint-Jean, was first known as Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Saint-Jean, named after the parish founded in 1854. A few years later in 1857, the Municipality of Lac-Saint-Jean was formed but in 1859 was split into several municipalities including the Municipality of Roberval. It was named after the geographic township of Roberval, which in turn was named by surveyor Joseph Bouchette in honour of the first Lieutenant General of New France Jean-François de la Roque de Roberval (1496–1560). In 1862, the Roberval post office opened.

Roberval, ro‘ber-val’, or Lac Saint Jean, a post-village and resort of Chicoutimi co., Quebec, on Lake St. John, 78 miles W. of Chicoutimi, on the Quebec and Lake St. John R. It has a nunnery and lumbermills. Elevation, 350 feet.
About Roberval
A navigation centre for the lake and an internationally renowned summer resort until the early 20th century, Roberval also had a few sawmills. The Ursulines built their provincial convent here in 1882. A hospital was added in 1918.

It is the county seat for Lac-Saint-Jean-Ouest (incorporated in 1892) and headquarters for the judicial district of Roberval (1912). Named for France's lieutenant-general in Canada in the 16th century, Roberval was founded in 1855 and grew rapidly after 1888 when the Québec-Lac-Saint-Jean railway company (amalgamated into the Canadian National Railway in 1917) decided to make the town its Lac Saint-Jean terminal. In 1903 it became the first municipality in the region to gain the status of a town. In 1976 it merged with the parish of Saint-Jean-de-Brébeuf (1930) to form the current town.
