ABOUT THE PLACE
About Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge
In 1801, Stanbridge Township became the property of James McGill, a Montreal merchant and founder of McGill University. Upon his death, the Township, 31 000 acres in size, was left to his heirs, the DesRivières family. Its growth really began in 1840, when François-Guillaume and Henri DesRivières settled there – their first task being the construction of Malmaison Manor in 1841. In 1842, they built a dam on the river; in 1843 the dam powered two mills and the first covered bridge was built. The wood industry elevated the region's prosperity, and the government of Lower Canada planned and built the Grande-Ligne Road. The community would benefit greatly. In 1848, the municipality of Notre-Dame-des-Anges-de-Stanbridge was formed, and Henri DesRivières was named its first mayor and first prefect of the incorporated Missisquoi County.

The territory of the current municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge, just like the current municipality of Stanbridge and that of Stanbridge Station was erected in the township of Stanbridge, on September 1, 1801.
It was in 1830 that the first settlers came to settle on the territory of Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge.
They were Messrs. François-Guillaume and Henri DesRivières, two sons of Mr. François-Amable DesRivières, the latter had inherited these lands in 1813 and bequeathed them to his sons.
In 1842, the residents built a dam in the river.
Around 1850, the first sawmill and the first carding mill were erected there. These two mills belonged to a single owner, Mr. Joseph Couture and were located on two sides of the dyke. Logging ensured prosperity, so the government had the Grand-Ligne road laid out and built.
1845 - Église de Notre-Dame-des-Anges established
It was in 1889 that the agglomeration took the name of Notre-Dame de Stanbridge, when it was erected as a parish municipality.
The arrival of the telephone took place in 1912 and electricity was established there in 1927.
