The first colonists arrived in what would be Stanbridge Station in the middle of the 19th century. The rail era and the arrival of the Montreal and Vermont Junction in 1801 shaped the town's economic life up to and beyond its incorporation in 1889. The name Stanbridge came from the Township of the same name, and Station emphasized the importance of the railway station that served the town until 1955. Stanbridge Station is also a productive agricultural community, with large dairy farms, garden markets and fruit farms. The recent arrival of immigrants from Spain, France, Switzerland and Belgium has enhanced the local culture.

Stanbridge Station was created following the construction of the Montreal & Vermont Junction railway line in 1867. The railway undeniably ensured the economic development of the townships.
At the time, Stanbridge Station was a station that provided significant postal, passenger and freight traffic. It played this role until the Central Vermont line closed in 1954.

It is eighteen miles from St. Johns, fare 60 cents ; two and a half miles from Bedford, fare stage 26 cents ; six miles from Stanbridge, fare 60 cents ; twelve miles from Dunham. Population about 160. An active mercantile trade is done in this place."
