Wilton, Maine, USA - Wilton, Maine, USA - Main Street

[WIL-tun] a town in Franklin County, incorporated on June 22, 1803 from Tyngstown Plantation.

It later ceded land to nearby Chesterville in 1811 and Temple in 1831.

First named Harrytown for a dangerous local Indian, it was renamed Tyngstown for the leader of the expedition in which “Warrior Harry” was killed.

By 1803, when Abraham Butterfield paid for the towns incorporation, the name as changed to that of his hometown in New Hampshire – Wilton...

East Wilton is an unincorporated village in the town of Wilton.

1839 - Wilton
Wilton, Maine
Franklin county. This is one of the most flourishing agricultural townships in the state. It has a fertile soil, a beautiful surface, and two pleasant villages. It lies a little distance from Sandy river, 5 or 6 miles S.W. from Farmington and 38 W.N.W. from Augusta.

Wilton has an adequate water power for common purposes, produced from streams issuing from beautiful ponds in the town. The people are principally agriculturalists, and tested their skill in that delightful pursuit, in 1837, by producing 11,071 bushels of good clean wheat.

Wilton was incorporated in 1803. Population, in 1830, 1,140; 1837, 2,102.

1906 - Wilton
Wilton, a post-village in Wilton township (town), Franklin co., Me., 7 miles SW. of Farmington. The town has manufactures of woollen goods, boots, etc. Pop. of the town in 1900, 1647. Wilton station on the Maine Central R., is 8 1/ 2 miles SW. of Farmington.
