La Visitation-de-l'Île-Dupas is located approximately 78 kilometers from Montreal and 193 kilometers from Quebec City, northeast of Joliette and at the entrance and near the left shore of Lake Saint-Pierre . The municipality covers an area of approximately 37 square kilometers.

1665 - The first Frenchman settling on the largest island was reputedly Pierre Dupas (1637-1677), officier in the Carignan Regiment who arrived in Canada in 1665.
Together with two servants, he settled in 1669 on the island which came to bear his name, and he became the first Lord of the l'Île-Dupas-et-du-Chicot Seignory in 1672. In 1677, his widow sold the seignory to Charles Aubert de La Chesnaye.

The settlement of Île Dupas began in 1699.
A few families originating from the seigneury of Champlain settled there at the time on a territory extending from south to north, in the vicinity of Saint-Cuthbert and Berthierville. . These settlers also settled on the island formerly identified as Isle du Pads, also known as Isle du Pas, the largest island in the Lac Saint-Pierre archipelago.

including CHICOT, seigniory in the co. of Berthier. This S. contains the Isle Dupas and extends 1/ 4 l. above and below the R. Chicot and 1 1/ 2 l. in depth. Granted, Nov. 3, 1672, to Sieur Dupas. The rents of the S. are 4 French livres for each farm. Isle Dupas, which is a long narrow island, lying nearly parallel with the N. shore of the St. Lawrence, between the S. of Berhier and Sorel, is and arriere fief, 2 l. long by 16 acres broad; one-half belongs to the Hon. Jas. Cuthbert, the other half to Mrs. Eneau and is subject to the annual payment of a nosegay to the seignior of Berthier. Mrs. Eneau is also proprietor of the fief Chicot. All the lands in Isle Dupas are conceded and the greater part prior to 1759.
