Topsham, Maine, USA - Topsham, Maine, USA - Paper Mills

[TOPS-suhm] in Sagadahoc County, was incorporated on January 31, 1764 as the nineteenth town in Maine. In 1788 it annexed Patten’s Point from Bowdoinham, but ceded other land to that town in 1830. maineanencyclopedia.com

Topsham is situated on the eastern bank of the Androscoggin River, across from the city of Brunswick.

Topsham was settled in the early 1600s by English colonists, making it one of the oldest towns in the region. The town was originally part of the larger town of Brunswick but was incorporated as its own municipality in 1764.

Historically, Topsham's economy was based on shipbuilding, lumbering, and manufacturing. In the 19th century, it was home to several shipyards and sawmills. Today, the economy has diversified to include retail, services, and small-scale manufacturing.

Topsham, Maine
One of the shire towns of Lincoln county. Topsham is pleasantly situated on the N. side of Androscoggin river opposite to Brunswick. This is a good farming town, and, in common with Brunswick, enjoys a great hydraulic power, and accommodations for ship building and navigation. It is a place of considerable trade, and much lumber is annually shipped.

Topsham was incorporated in 1764. Population, 1837, 1,778.

Topsham, a post-village in Topsham township (town), Sagadahoc co., Me., on the N. bank of the Androscoggin River, opposite Brunswick, 9 miles W. of Bath, and on the Maine Central R. The town has manufactures of paper and flint-mills. Pop. of the town in 1900, 2097.
