[TOPS-field] was settled first in 1832 by Nehemiah Kneeland from Topsfield, Massachusetts an incorporated on February 24, 1838 from the township T8 R2 NBPP. Just over 100 years later, it surrendered its status as a town, a fate of several Maine towns during the Great Depression...

Washington county. This township was number eight in the second range north of the Bingham Penobscot Purchase. It was incorporated in the year 1838. We guess that this town lies about 25 miles N.N.E. from the mouth of Matawamkeag River. We should like to know "how the land lies." See "Down East."
