Salem is an extinct town, now a township in the East Central Franklin townships. In 1823 it was organized as a town from Freeman, Mount Abram, and Phillips going by the name of North Salem; but the name was changed to simply Salem in 1834. Somerset county. This town is watered by a branch of Seven Mile Brook, and lies 52 miles N.N.W. from Augusta, and 28 N.W. from Norridgewock. Incorporated, 1823. Population, 1837, 496. This is a good farming town; it produced, in 1837, 4,216 bushels of wheat.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
