Phippsburg: Located in Sagadahoc County, Phippsburg is a coastal town with access to sandy beaches, including Popham Beach State Park. The area is also known for its historic sites and hiking trails.

The population gradually increased until King Philip's War, when Indians in August 1676 attacked the eastern side of the Kennebec River, massacring and scalping the colonists, or else carrying them into captivity. Dwellings were burned and stocks of cattle killed. The entire area was abandoned...

Slow resettlement of the Phippsburg peninsula found ten farms along the Kennebec River by 1751, with five more on the Casco Bay side. But the districts gathered into Georgetown-on-Arrowsic began splitting away; in 1759, Woolwich withdrew, followed in 1781 by Bath. In 1814, Phippsburg was set off and incorporated. The original petition requested that it be named Dromore after one of the town's oldest sections, but Massachusetts chose instead to honor one of its royal governors, Sir William Phips—actually a native of Woolwich, Maine...

1839 - Phipsburgh
Phipsburgh, Maine
Lincoln county. This is a maritime town at the mouth of Kennebec river, on the west side, 40 miles S. from Augusta and 18 S.W. from Wiscasset. Population, 1837, 1,430. It consists of a peninsula of land, of about 15 miles in length, and from two to four miles in width, lying between Kennebec river, on the east, and New Meadows, or Stevens' river, on the west, and extending from Small Point, the eastern boundary of Casco bay, to the town of Bath on the north. It contains a U.S. fort, and Seguin and Pond islands, on which are light houses.

Phipsburgh was taken from the ancient town of Bristol, in 1816, and named in honor of Governor Phips, who was born in Bristol.

Governor Phips lived in the wilderness of Maine till he was eighteen years of age, and was then an apprentice to a ship-carpenter four years. He went to Boston, and learned to read and write. Phippsburg, a post-township (town) of Sagadahoc co., Me., about 8 miles S. of Bath. It has saw-mills, and borderes on the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Kennebec Rier. Pop. in 1900, 1254.
