[muh-RII-ah-vil] is a town in Hancock County, first settled in 1802 and known as Bingham. It was incorporated on February 29, 1836 from Mariaville Plantation.In 1850 it set off land to form the short lived town of Tilden, which was annexed back to Mariaville in 1852.
The town, with substantial frontage on Graham Lake and the east and west branches of the Union River, was named for William Bingham’s daughter Maria.

Hancock county. This is a township of good land, finely located on the E. side of Union river, 8 miles N. by E. from Ellsworth and 89 E.N.E. from Augusta. This town has an extensive water power and many saw mills. It was incorporated in 1836. Population, 1837, 257.
