About Hancock

Hancock: Located in Hancock County, the town of Hancock offers beautiful views of the surrounding coastal landscape and is known for its proximity to Acadia National Park. The town is a peaceful retreat with many outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, birdwatching, and boating.

It was first settled in 1766 by Philip and S. Hodgkins from Georgetown. Formed from portions of Sullivan, Trenton and Plantation No. 8, the town was incorporated by the state legislature on February 21, 1828 and named for John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Hancock, Maine
Hancock county. This town was taken from Sullivan and Trenton in 1828. It is situated between those towns, and is nearly surrounded by the head waters of Frenchman's bay. It is a place of some navigation, 85 miles E. from Augusta, and bounded easterly by Ellsworth. Population, 1837, 653.
