The town was named for Robert Gould, a landholder in the town.
The town has many historically separate fishing villages, summer colonies and communities, including Birch Harbor, Prospect Harbor, South Gouldsboro, West Gouldsboro, Summer Harbor, Wonsqueak Harbor, Bunker's Harbor, Chicken Mill, Jones' Pond, Westbay, and Corea. wikipedia
Gouldsboro, also known as Goldsboro, is a town and former plantation in southeast Hancock County. It was first organized from Township Number 3, East of the Union River Livermore Survey (T3 EUR LS) as a plantation prior to 1789. That year the plantation was incorporated as a town. The part of Plantation Number 7 SD called West Bay Stream was annexed in 1845, and part of that plantation called the Sowle Tract was annexed in 1870. The spelling was changed to Gouldsboro in 1887. Gouldsboro land was set off to Winter Harbor in 1895. More Number 7 SD land was annexed to Gouldsboro in 1905. familysearch.org

Goldsborough, Maine
Hancock county. This is a large township on the Atlantic ocean, containing a number of excellent harbors, and nearly surrounded by water. It is admirably located for all the various pursuits in navigation. Goldsborough harbor, on the E. side of the town, is capacious and easy of approach by almost any wind. Frenchman's bay extends on the W. side of the town and affords it many commercial advantages. It lies 99 miles E. from Augusta, 27 S.E. from Ellsworth, and is bounded by Sullivan on the N. Incorporated, 1789. Population, 1830, 880; 1837, 1,047.
