Freeman was settled in 1797 and incorporated as a town in 1808 from the Little River Plantation. Freeman's incorporation was surrendered in 1937.familysearch.org

Freeman, Maine
Franklin county. This small town of only 17,000 acres, most of which is woodland, with a population of 805, produced 6,485 bushels of wheat in 1837. Freeman is the source of a small branch of Sandy river. It lies 62 miles N.W. from Augusta and 15 N. from Farmington.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
