About Crawford

Crawford was incorporated on February 11, 1828 under the name Adams, presumably after then-incumbent President, John Q. Adams. The name was changed to Crawford only 17 days later on February 28, 1828, in honor of former Secretary of Treasury William H. Crawford of Georgia.

1839 - Crawford
Crawford, Maine
Washington county. Incorporated, 1828. This is a good township of land, and was formerly called Adams. A large pond in Crawford and a part of another are the sources of a branch of East Machias river. Population, 1837, 311. Located about 30 miles N. from Machias, and 140 E.N.E. from Augusta.
