Crawford was incorporated on February 11, 1828 under the name Adams, presumably after then-incumbent President, John Q. Adams. Crawford, Maine
Washington county. Incorporated, 1828. This is a good township of land, and was formerly called Adams. A large pond in Crawford and a part of another are the sources of a branch of East Machias river. Population, 1837, 311. Located about 30 miles N. from Machias, and 140 E.N.E. from Augusta.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
