Called Phipps-Canada, it would be incorporated in 1795 as Jay in honor of John Jay, the first chief justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. On February 5, 1821, Canton was set off from Jay and incorporated, named after Canton, Massachusetts.

Oxford county. Incorporated, 1821. Population, 1837, 827. It lies on both sides of the Androscoggin river, 32 miles W.N.W. from Augusta and 24 N.E. from Paris. Canton produced, in 1837, 3,114 bushels of wheat.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
