Buckfield, Maine, USA - Buckfield, Maine, USA - Village Square from North Side

It was first settled in 1776 by Benjamin Spaulding from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a fur trapper. Abijah Buck and Thomas Allen settled in the area in spring of 1777 with their families. In 1785, the inhabitants procured a survey of the town and purchased it from Massachusetts for 2 shillings per acre. Originally called Bucktown Plantation (or Plantation No. 5), in 1793 the Massachusetts General Court incorporated it as Buckfield, named for Abijah Buck.

Buckfield, Maine
Oxford county. This town is finely watered by a branch of Androscoggin river. It is bounded on the W. by Paris, and is 34 miles W. by S. from Augusta, and 50 N. by W. from Portland. Population, 1837, 1,618. The soil of this town is very good. Among its agricultural products, in 1837, it yielded 5,613 bushels of wheat.

Buckfield, a post-village of Oxford co., Me., on an affluent of the Androscoggin River and on the Portland and Rumford Falls R., 48 miles N. of Portland. Pop. in 1900, 1140.
