Settled largely by German immigrants, it developed as a farming and fishing community. On February 19, 1828, the town was set off and incorporated, named after Bremen, Germany.

Located on Muscongus Bay and the Gulf of Maine, it includes the villages of Broad Cove, Turners Corner, Bremen, Medomak and Muscongus.

Bremen, Maine
Lincoln county. This town was formerly a part of Bristol. It is bounded N. by Nobleborough, west by Bristol, south by Pemmaquid point in Bristol, and east by Muscongus bay. It lies about 40 miles S.E. from Augusta and 15 E.S.E. from Wiscasset, and possesses great navigable privileges. Population, 1837, 773.
