Originally known as Township 2 Abbott's Purchase or Upper Town, this settlement was established in 1781 by two sea captains: Joshua Soule, hailing from Duxbury, Massachusetts and later Bremen, Maine, and Perkins Allen from Martha's Vineyard. The town was officially incorporated on February 22, 1802, and was named after the River Avon in England.

Franklin county. Avon lies 35 miles W. by N. from Norridgewock and 50 N.N.W. from Augusta. It was incorporated in 1802. Population, 1837, 767. It is watered by some of the head branches of Sandy river. In 1837, this town produced 3,220 bushels of wheat.
