Schaghticoke, a post-township forming the N. W. extremity of Rensselaer co., New York, on the Hudson river. Population, 8290.
Schaghticoke, a post-village in the above township, on the Hoosic river and on the Albany Northern railroad, 21 miles N. N. E. from Albany. It contains 8 or 4 churches, and several cotton factories and mills.

1854 - Fatal Railroad Accident.
Troy, Tuesday, Jan. 3. The first train from Rutland, on the Albany and Northern Railroad, this morning broke an axle near Schaghticoke Point, while on the long bridge. A brakeman was instantly killed; but although the cars were completely demolished, none of the passengers, some sixty in number, were injured. The track was all torn up, and had it not been for the extension rail, the cars would all have been thrown into the river.

ALBANY, Aug. 3. - A terrible accident occurred on the Northern Railroad, Near Schagticoke [sic], last night. The down train, due in Albany at 7:25 P. M., while passing over the bridge which spans the Tomhannock, was precipitated into the creek below, a distance of twenty to twenty-five feet. The water was about six or eight feet deep. Over thirteen persons are reported to have been killed. The following are the names, as far as they are known, of the killed and injured.
Killed. - MRS. SCHUYLER, of Albany; MRS. COOLEY, (wife of conductor,) Albany; CHARLES BERTHELON, brakeman, Albany; CHARLES PLIMPTON, mail agent, Vermont; DAVID RUSSELL, express messenger, Albany; PATRICK CONNOLLY, trackman, Greenbush.

Schaghticoke is situated in the northwest corner of the county, and is bounded on the north by the town of Easton, Washington county; on the east by PIttstown, from which it is separated in part by the Hoosick river; on the south by Pittstown and Lansingburgh, and on the west by the towns of Halfmoon and Stiliwater, in Saratoga county, from which it is separated by the Hudson river. The Revised Statutes of the State describe the town as follows:
The town of Schaghticoke shall contain all that part of said county bounded as follows: Beginning in Hudson's River, at the northwest corner of the county, and running thence east along the north bounds of the county to the middle of Hoosick River; thence down along said river to Viele's or Toll's bridge; then a direct course to the westernmost corner of the grist-mill heretofore or late of Michael Cook, of Cooksburgh; thence westerly along the bounds of Lansingburgh to the bounds of the county; then northerly along the same to the place of ...
