Argyle, once a thriving plantation and town, now exists as an unorganized territory (township) in Penobscot County, Maine. Established in 1810, Argyle Plantation, initially part of Old Indian Township Number 3 West of Penobscot River (T3 OIP WPR), was later known as the Maine Literary and Theological Institute Grant, or the Birch Stream Settlement. In 1839, the eastern section of Argyle Plantation became the town of Argyle, while the Moor Tract was ceded to Old Town in 1843. Subsequently, a portion of Argyle was used to create Alton in 1844. The remaining part of Argyle relinquished its town status in 1937, becoming an unorganized territory.
