Alna, Maine, USA - Alna, Maine, USA - Old Meeting House, Alna, Maine. Built in 1789. Rededicated September 11, 1889.

Originally a portion of the old Pownalborough, this town was established around 1760 and formally incorporated in 1794 by the Massachusetts General Court under the name New Milford. However, the residents were dissatisfied with this name, leading to its change in 1811 to Alna, derived from Latin for alder, a tree abundant along the Sheepscot River's banks.

The Head Tide Historic District in Alna, Maine, encompasses a village that was once industrial but is now predominantly rural, situated at the point where the tide begins on the Sheepscot River.

Alna, Maine
This town is situated in the county of Lincoln, 10 miles N. from Wiscasset, 54 N.E. from Portland, and 20 S.S.E. from Augusta. Incorporated, 1794. Population, 1837, 1,138. This is a pleasant town and well watered by Sheepscot river.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
