ABOUT THE PLACE

About Albany

Albany, Maine, was first settled in the late 18th century. Originally part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it became an area of interest for settlers moving inland from the coastal regions. Albany was incorporated as a town in 1803 and was known for its agricultural activities, as well as its timber and mill industries, which were common economic drivers in early New England settlements. The town's development was influenced by its location near the White Mountains and its access to rivers, which facilitated transportation and trade. Albany remained a small, rural community throughout its history.

Albany is an extinct town, now an unorganized territory (township) in the South Oxford townships of Oxford County, Maine. Albany was settled in 1784, and the town was organized in 1803. Part of Albany was set off to Waterford in 1811. Albany surrendered its town organization in 1937. familysearch.org
