Albany, Maine, was first settled in the late 18th century. Originally part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it became an area of interest for settlers moving inland from the coastal regions. Albany was incorporated as a town in 1803 and was known for its agricultural activities, as well as its timber and mill industries, which were common economic drivers in early New England settlements. The town's development was influenced by its location near the White Mountains and its access to rivers, which facilitated transportation and trade. Albany remained a small, rural community throughout its history.Albany is an extinct town, now an unorganized territory (township) in the South Oxford townships of Oxford County, Maine. Oxford county. This town was incorporated in 1803. It lies about 17 miles W. by N. from Paris and 58 W. from Augusta. It is the source of Crooked river, which empties into Sebago Lake. Population, 1837, 598.
