Barnstable county. This town is very pleasantly situated on the shoulder of Cape Cod, 12 miles S.W. from Barnstable, 30 E. from New Bedford, and 53 S.E. from Boston. Incorporated, 1639. Population, 1830, 3,367; 1837, 3,579. Sandwich is watered by a number of streams which afford a good water power; and by numerous ponds, some of which are large, affording a variety of excellent fish. The forests afford an abundance of deer, and to the lovers of rural sports, Sandwich and the neighboring towns of Barnstable and Falmouth have justly become favorite resorts. The value of the manufactures of the town for the year ending April 1, 1837, amounted to $382,248. They consisted of glass, ($300,000) leather, nails, vessels, salt, iron castings, stoves, &c. The value of the New England crown glass has been fully tested and found to be as clear and stronger than any other now in use. Sandwich has a good harbor, and about 20 sail of coasting and fishing vessels.

Sandwich was settled by persons from Saugus, then a part of Lynn.

The soil is better than that of other towns in the county, which grows more sandy and barren as it goes east, until there is hardly any verdure.

Glass, and the fisheries, employ the inhabitants.

The ponds and brooks furnish abundance of fish and game.

A ship canal across the isthmus was once seriously contemplated, the distance being only five miles.

Sandwich, a post-village in Barnstable co., Massachusetts, on Cope Cod bay, at the terminus of the Cape Cod Branch railroad, 66 miles S. £. from Boston, contains 5 or 6 churches and an academy. Population of the township, 4368.

1883 - An Old Lady Burned to Death.
SANDWICH, Mass., Oct. 4.- Mrs. Sally Ransted, widow of the late John Ransted, aged 80, and an invalid, was burned to death today, her clothing taking fire from an open grate. She was alone in the house at the time, and it is supposed that she fell upon the fire during an apoplectic fit.

The recent difference between the glass manufacturers of Sandwich, Mass., and their employes has been settled by mutual agreement and amicable relations restored. The men express themselves as satisfied with the terms of the settlement, and a good season's work is anticipated.

Sandwich lies on the southwest side of Cape Cod Bay, in the northwestern part of Barnstable county, and is 62 miles from Boston on the Cape Cod Division of the Old Colony Railroad. The stations are Sandwich and East Sandwich; and these, with Forestdale, South Sandwich and Spring Hill, are post-offices. Other villages are Farmersville, Greenville, Scorton and Wakeby.

The town is bounded on the northeast by Cape Cod Bay, on the southeast by Barnstable, on the south by Mashpee and Falmouth, and on the west and northwest by Bourne. The assessed area is 20,955 acres; the extent of woodland being about 15,000 acres. The principal harbor, on which is situated Sandwich village, lies near the middle of the shore line. Scusset harbor is at the northwest border of the town; and between the two lies Town Neck. Scorton harbor, at the other extremity, forms Scorton Neck. Sandwich, a post-village in Sandwich township, Barn stable co., Mass., on Cape Cod Bay, and on the Cape Cod division of the Old Colony Railroad, 62 miles S.S.E. of Boston. It has an academy, 4 churches, a newspaper office, a savings-bank, and manufactures of glass-ware, jewelry boxes, and tacks. The township (which contains villages named Monument, North Sandwich, West Sandwich, and South Sandwich) is bounded on the W. by Buzzard's Bay. Pop. of the township in 1890, 1819.
