Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - Main St., 1906

The town was granted in 1764 by colonial governor Benning Wentworth as "Poplin". In 1853, Poplin petitioned the state legislature to change the name. In 1854, it became "Fremont" after General John C. Frémont, the first candidate of the Republican Party in the presidential election of 1856.

1839 - Poplin
Poplin, New Hampshire
Rockingham county, is 24 miles W.S.W. from Portsmouth, and 33 S.S.E. from Concord. There is a small pond in the N. part of the town called Loon pond; and the town is watered by Squamscot, or Exeter river, beside several small streams. The soil is generally of a good quality, and the surface of the town is not broken by high hills. Poplin was incorporated in 1764. The inhabitants are principally industrious farmers. Population in 1830, 429.

Fremont, a post - township of Rockingham co., N.H., about 28 miles S. E. of Concord, and on the Nashua & Rochester Railroad, 24 miles N.E. of Nashua. It has 2 churches, and manufactures of barrels, carriages, lumber, mattresses, woven wire, and spring rocking-chairs. Pop. 726.
