Hillsborough county. This town is distant 37 miles S. from Concord and 19 S.E. from Amherst. Here are three ponds, called Gumpas, Island, and North ponds. Beaver river passes through the town. On this river and the tributary streams there is much valuable meadow.—The inhabitants depend principally on agriculture for the means of support. Much timber and cord wood are carried annually to the banks of the Merrimack, and thence conveyed to Newburyport, or to Boston through Middlesex canal. The first settlements were made in 1722. The town was incorporated in 1746, about 5 years after the state line was established, by which a part was separated from Dracut, Mass. Population in 1830, 1,075.

PELHAM, a post - township of Hillsborough co., New Hampshire, 38 miles S. S. E. from Concord, contains a village of its own name. Population, 1071.

Pelham, a post - village in Pelham township, Hills- borough co., N.H., on Beaver River, about 8 miles S.E. of Nashua, and 7 miles N. of Lowell, Mass. It has 1 or 2 churches and manufactures of lumber. The township has granite-quarries and a pop. of 861.

1903 - KILLED IN TROLLEY WRECK. SIX PERSONS DEAD AND MANY BADLY HURT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Pelham, N.H., Sept. 6. -- Through a head-on collision today between two electric cars, each running, it is said, at a rate of more than twenty-five miles an hour, six persons were killed and over a score seriously injured that they are under physicians' care, and some of these may die.
There were seventy persons on the two cars, and every one received cuts and minor wounds, which, however, did not prevent their reaching their homes.
The accident occurred just before noon on the line which runs through this town between Lowell and Nashua, and one of the cars which was coming from the latter city was nearly filled with people on their was to a Summer resort. The collision was due, according to the officials of the road, to a misunderstanding of the starter's orders by the motorman of the car bound for Nashua.
