Rockingham county. Adjoining the E. line of the county of Hillsborough. This town contains very little waste land, and it is believed, has as extensive a body of fertile soil as any town in the E. section of the state. It lies 25 miles S.S.E. from Concord and 35 S.W. from Portsmouth. Population, in 1830, 1,469.

Londonderry, which formerly included the present town of Derry, was settled in 1719, by a colony of presbyterians from the vicinity of the city of Londonderry, in the N. of Ireland, to which place their ancestors had emigrated about a century before from Scotland. They were a part of 120 families, chiefly from three parishes, who with their religious instructors came to New England in the summer of 1718. In October, 1718, they applied to the government of Massachusetts for the grant of a township, and received assurances that a grant should be made them when they should select a place for its location. 1906 - AT LONDONDERRY Big Boiler Explosion On Friday LIVES OF THIRTY MEN WERE IN DANGER $10,000 Loss In The Rockingham County Town FACTORY WILL BE COMPELLED TO TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN
Londonderry, N. H., Jan. 19.--A boiler connected with the Annis grain and lumber mills plant at North Londonderry exploded today, wrecking the boiler and the engine house, and damaging both the grain mill and the wood working factory, besides causing injuries to Justin Sanborn, the engineer.

The boiler was one of two which are used in operating the mill. It burst with a report which was heard for a long distance, and was thought at first to have been an earthquake.

The concussion practically demolished the brick boiler house and threw the second boiler out of place. Flying debris also knocked off portions of the ends of the wood mill and the grain mill, between which the boiler was located.

The plant was compelled to shut down and it will be practically idle, it is believed, for about six weeks, until repairs can be effected.

The total damage is placed at about $10,000.

1948 - DERRY MAN KILLED, 4 HURT AS TRUCK, TRAIN COLLIDE.
Londonderry, July 16 (AP) - The flaming collision of an oil truck and a railroad locomotive claimed the life of one man yesterday and injured four trainmen.

The victim was identified by authorities as RALPH GILCHRIST, 32, of Derry, driver of the huge trailer truck.

Police said the truck burst into flames when it crashed into the train engine, hurling it into a ditch. The collision occurred at a grade crossing.
The truck was destroyed by fire along with the wooden caboose of the Boston and Maine train. The train consisted of the locomotive, tender and the caboose.

The injured, treated at Derry hospital, were:
Engineer CHARLES L. GILLESPIE, 68, of Methuen, Mass., shaken up.
Fireman ROBERT W. ALBERTSON, 23, of Rockport, Mass., cut knee.
Trainman JOHN SHAUGHNESSY, 27, of Woburn, Mass., cut elbow.
Trainman GEORGE M. GUIBORD, 29, of Salem, Mass.
The engineer and fireman jumped from the locomotive before it overturned. SHAUGHNESSY dragged GUIBORD from the caboose.
