Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - Copeland Block and Main St., 1906

The town was incorporated in 1761 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. First named "Enfield" by settlers from Enfield, Connecticut, the town was renamed "Relhan" in 1766 to honor Dr. Anthony Relhan (c. 1715–1776). The doctor was a promoter of sea-bathing as a curative, making Brighton, England, a fashionable resort. Following the American Revolution, the New Hampshire town was renamed Enfield in 1784.

1839 - Enfield
Enfield, New Hampshire
Grafton county. Enfield comprises 24,060 acres, of which about 2,500 acres are water. It is 10 miles S.E. from Dartmouth College, and 40 N.W. from Concord. Its surface is diversified with hills and valleys, and watered by a variety of ponds and streams, stored with fish of every species common to the country. Mascomy pond, which has acquired from travellers the appellation of Pleasant pond, is a beautiful collection of water, 4 miles in length and of various breadth, interspersed with islands and checkered with inlets. Its eastern banks are covered with trees; the hills gradually rise one above another for some distance. Along the western bank, between the pond and Mont Calm, within a few rods of the water, extends the turnpike road, the whole distance through a beautiful village, shaded to the N. on either side by a growth of trees. 1895 - Enfield
Enfield, a post - village of Grafton co., N.H., on the Mascoma River, in Enfield township, and on the Northern Railroad, 59 miles N.W. of Concord. It has 3 churches, a tannery, and manufactures of flannel and hosiery. There are several beautiful lakes in the township, which also contains a community of Shakers and a village named Enfield Centre. Pop. of the township, 1439.
