Kirby is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont. The town was chartered to Roswell Hopkins in 1790. The grant Hopkins received was orignially called Hopkinsville; it was later combined with a parcel from Burke and renamed Kirby. Kirby, Vermont
Caledonia county. First settled 1799. Population, 1830, 401. There are some tracts of good land in Kirby, but the township is generally either wet or cold, or too mountainous for cultivation. It has a number of springs, brooks, and a good fish pond. The town lies 36 miles N.E. from Montpelier, and 14 N.E. from Danville.

The settlement of this township was commenced about the year 1799, by Phinehas Page and Theophilus Grout, who were soon after joined by Josiah Joslin, Jude White, Jonathan Leach, Ebenezer Damon, Antipas Harrington, Asahel Burt, Jonathan Lewis, and others, principally from New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
First Ministers. A Congregational Church was formed here in 1812.
Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 2,370 bushels; Indian corn, 1,020 bushels; potatoes, 29,435 bushels ; hay, 1,887 tons ; maple sugar, 8,142 pounds ; wool, 4,547 pounds.
